Discussion in class

Today in class today we had a discussion about some of the facts we found on the CSI website. Some of the topics were about migration and the birth rate. We also discussed the rate of children and parents with aids in Africa. It is so sad because they don't receive enough medical treatment so many children are dying and or living with aids and HIV. We also discussed life expectancy and population.   We learned about a little island that Kate had a lot of "interesting" facts about. We also learned the format of our test which will be sometime next week. For the test we have to use the CSI website to find the information, so its basically like a web quest. Overall class was fun and interesting today.

CIA World fact book assignment

The World Fact book contains a lot of helpful information about The United States and many other places. I chose Fiji. Fiji's birth rate is 18.6. This blows me away because that is a lot of babies. I think that its so shocking because the United States is such a large place and its birth rate is only 12.5. When I think of Fiji, I think of this small place but with the birth rate that high I change my perspective. In class we are studying birth rate, so to find this out about Fiji is very cool and surprising.

In class we also learned about life expectancy. The life expectancy in Iceland is 83.1 years. For males it is 80.9 and for females it is 85.4 years old. I think that 80-85 is a nice long life to live. I thought that the number was going to be a little bit higher considering it being in Europe. We also learned that women have a longer life expectancy than men because men are the breadwinners for the family and tend to crazy things or have crazy jobs.

We also learned about total fertility rate. The fertility rate in Algeria is 2.7 children born to a woman. This surprises me because Africa has a lot of problems there and the fact that they are only having having close to 3 children is shocking. Usually African families have 3 or more children. So the fertility rate seems a little low to me.

Something else we learned was called net migration rate. The net migration rate in Costa Rica is 0.8 migrants per 1,000 people. This number doesn't surprise me because most people who are migrating want to migrate to America so the migration rate in Costa Rica is very low. Costa Rica is number 60 on the list of most migration to the least. Surprisingly The British Virgin Islands are the most populated place for migrants.

In Finland the population is 5,518,371 million people. Finland is located in Europe and is 87.9% a Finnish speaking country. Then 5.2% Swedish and 1.4% Russian and 5.5% other. The population doesn't surprise me. My dad frequently goes to Finland for business and says its a great place. Finland is mostly rural area filled with cute little towns. The capital is Helsinki.

Measuring population and migration

Today in class we took some notes on population as well as immigration and the fertility rate. The crude birth rate is the number of births per 1,000 of the population. Crude death rate is the number of deaths per 1,000 of the population. Rate of natural increase is produced by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate. This gives us the annual natural growth rate in percentage form- for a country or region. Net migration rate is the difference between the number of persons entering and leaving a country during a year. Net immigration is the excess of persons entering the country. Net immigration is written as a positive number. Net emigration is the excess of persons leaving the country. Net emigration is written as a negative number.

Test talk and notes

Today in class we got our tests back. I got an 80 which is a B. I definitely could have studied more but I thought I did better than the score I got. W also took notes today on life expectancy. Life expectancy is the average number of years to be lived by a group of people born in the same year. The highest life expectancy is in Monaco. The total is 89.52. The age expectancy for men is 85.63. The age expectancy for women is 93.58. The U.S. total is 79.68. For men the age expectancy 77.32 men. The expectancy for women is 81.97. The lowest is in Chad. The total is 49.81. The expectancy for men is 48.64. The expectancy for women is 51.03.

Population and Settlement

Today in class we started a new topic on Population and settlement. We learned that there are over 7.5 billion people on the planet right now. Every year the population increases by 73 million. 90% of this population growth takes place in the developing countries of Africa, South and East Asia, and Latin America. We learned that people die and people come into this world every 10 seconds. in 1804 the population was 1 billion people. In the range of 214 years the population grew to 7 billion and will keep growing. In the next 11-12 years there will be 8 billion or more people in the world!

Test talk part 2

Today was the day....... We took the test in class. Honestly it was fairly easy but there was some hard parts. One of the questions gave the definition of Globalization but globalization wasn't one of the choices. So I guessed some random answer. But over all it was fair. I think I probably got a B just because I was unsure about some of them. I liked the format and thought that it was fair.

Test Game

Today in class we had Mr. Dmitri back and he decided that we should play a game to review for our test tomorrow. So long story short we played a game. Two people, from the opposing teams, went up to the whiteboard at the same time and were asked a review question. A lot of people get very....intense when they play a game and many people did. The game was actually very fun and very intense. I feel like it helped me to refresh my memory and make the facts easier to memorize. I personally had to do a lot of studying tonight but its ok. I feel very confident on the material and I feel that I am prepared for our test tomorrow!

Test Prep:)

So today in class we went over the topics that are going to be on our test which is Friday:( One of the topics we need to know is absolute location. Absolute location is the exact location something is, it include the longitude and latitude. We also learned about relative location which is when the places around the location are given and not the exact spot. We also went over the four types of distortion which is.......
1. the shape of an area can be distorted
2. the distance between points may become increased or decreased
3. relative size of different areas can be altered
4. direction between points can be distorted
We also need to know the definition of a map
map: diagrammatic representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features, cities, roads, etc.
We also need to know what cartography means.....
Cartography: the science or practice of drawing maps
We need to know many more things and thats only a little bit.

Test review

Today in class we went over our notes because we have a test next week. Yay!! We went over the Mercator projection as well as the Peters and Robinson projection. We also went over distortion on maps. There are four different types of distortion. One type is the shape of an area can be distorted. Second the distance between points may become increased or decreased. Third relatives size of different areas can be altered. And fourth direction between points can be distorted. We also went over that the equator and prime meridian. I definitely have to study because of the last test!!! Wish me luck!

Students teaching the class?

Today in class we took notes with a twist. Dmitri and Hank decided to teach some of the powerpoint slides today. It was actually very funny how Dmitri sounded like an actual teacher. Some of the topics we talked about was place names or toponym's. A toponym is the name given to a place on Earth. They are names derived from people of prominence, religious affiliation, physical features, or origins of its settlers. We also discussed site. Site is the physical character of a place, climate, water sources, topography, soil, vegetation, and latitude. Situation is another one. Situation is the location of a place relative to other places. A region is a unique area on earth defined by one or more distinctive characteristics. A region is most often applied at two scales. One being the spanning of political states. Two is that they are constrained within one political state. A region derives its unified character through the cultural landscape, a combination of cultural religious, and physical features."Culture is the agent, the natural area, the medium, the cultural landscape is the result."-Carl O. Sauer

Test talk

Today in Human Geo class we went over our tests from a couple weeks ago as well as discussing the NFL. I got an 84 on my test, which isn't the worst but I could have done a little better. We discussed the issues with Collin capernick as well as the NFL stuff. I personally am not against the fact that players are kneeling during the national anthem. But I disagree with the fact that they are protesting something during a football game, which they are being paid for. They kneel for justice and more freedom for colored people, but half of the people kneeling aren't very good role models. Most of the men have several children, all with different mothers. For example Ray Lewis has 6 kids with three different women. How are they supposed to be role models for thousands of people when they can't be role models for their own children.

GPS information

Today in class we learned about GPS's. They are a system that accurately determines the precise position of something on earth. The GPS in the U.S. has three elements....
1.) Satellites placed in predetermined orbits
2.) Tracking stations to monitor and control satellites
3.) Receiver that can locate at least 4 satellites, figure out its distance from earth, and use the information to calculate its precise location.
We also learned that they have turn-by-turn directions in vehicles swell as navigational aid to pilots and ship captains. They also provide location for social media application in a smart phone. We also argued about how knowing our location is a good thing but also a bad thing. If someone hacked our phones or social media they could get our location and rob us. We also talked about how Alexa can hear everything that everyone says and that people could hack that and find out confidential information.
